Large & riverside home removals in Twickenham
The large riverside and villa stock — Georgian and Palladian-influenced houses, Cross Deep, Marble Hill and the Strawberry Hill side, where volume and fragility arrive together.
The large houses along this stretch of the Thames are among the most rewarding buildings we work in and among the slowest. They were built for a different way of living, and everything about a moving day follows from that.
Volume arrives with fragility
Most large houses are simply bigger. These are bigger and more delicate: original boards, lime plaster, Georgian joinery, and a staircase that is beautiful and not remotely interested in a three-seat sofa.
That combination is why they are surveyed properly rather than estimated. The basement, the half-landing cupboards, the box rooms and the garden store are all coming; the marble tops, the gilt, the mirrors and the framed work all need cases.
Protection, in detail
- Boards over original floors along the whole route, not just the hall
- Padding on every frame the load passes, and on newel posts and stair returns
- An agreed decision about which staircase carries what
- Cases and crates for stone, glass, mirrors and framed work
- Antique furniture taken apart only where it was designed to come apart
That last one matters. Forcing a pegged or wedged joint that was never meant to open is how a good piece becomes a repaired one. Where it will not come apart, the route changes instead.
The street outside
Riverside streets are permit-controlled with nothing spare, the carriageways are narrow, and off-street standing is rare. The loading point is established at survey, not found on the day, and where the vehicle cannot get near we shuttle with extra hands — costed in the quote.
Two vehicles rather than two trips
On a genuinely large house, one vehicle doing two runs makes a long day longer and adds a handling to every item. We would rather send two and say so at survey, and where completion times are tight at both ends, splitting across two days beats compressing into one.

Standard households are on house removals, and storage covers the gap when a chain runs long.
Large-home questions
Short answers. If yours is not here, send it with your enquiry and we will answer it properly.
Why do these houses take longer?
Two reasons at once. The volume is larger than the floor plan implies — basements, half-landings, box rooms, garden stores — and a good share of the contents needs cases rather than blankets. Neither is visible from a room count.
What does the protection involve?
Boards over original floors along the whole route, padding on frames and newel posts, and an agreed decision about which staircase carries what. It adds time at the front of the day and removes the making-good conversation at the end of it.
Do you handle high-value contents?
Constantly on this stock. Declared at survey so cover is arranged and confirmed in writing before you book, and cased or crated rather than blanketed.
Will one vehicle do it?
Rarely on a genuinely large villa. We would rather send two than make two trips, and we say which at survey.
Is parking really that difficult?
On the riverside streets, yes. Permit-controlled with nothing spare, narrow carriageways, and very little off-street standing. The loading point is established in advance and we shuttle where we must.
